It was a fairly simple construction but there were some interesting joinery challenges, mainly the legs on which the top sits have to be super strong as there is a lot of weight on the "toes" of the base. So I decided to use massive slip tenons, or a bridal joint, which ever you prefer to call it, and concluded it would be more than enough to support the weight of the table.

I found there were some interesting challenges in cutting the round table top out with the router. If anyone else has done this email me how you did it as I found there was only one way to do it and it took a big screw up to discover it.

Another challenge was a bevel detail on the bottom of the top. It is a nice detail that will never be seen but it allows you to keep the thickness of the top for stability purposes and visually make it look thinner from the top. The actual execution was another mind bender but it worked out better than I had expected.

The attached photos are of the piece in progress. Some don't have the oil finish built up yet. I am delivering it tomorrow and will attach the legs in place. I will be sure to take some pictures of it completed as I have not seen it standing yet myself.
I will be back with more then.

wow Ian the whole piece looks fantastic. Very nice work. The qtr sawn walnut is tops!
Thanks Tyler! The picture of the top only has one coat of Waterlox on it. I got up to 8 I think so it is a lot better, not as nice as yours but still good. Yes I like straight grained walnut, it was a bit of a struggle to get stuff without knots in it, I just squeaked by.
very nice ian. i agree that the walnut looks fantastic. it's such a delightful wood.
can't wait to see pictures of it in the house... now all you need to do is sell them some chairs.
As said before, nice charming piece sir. What was the reaction on the bracket? I'm curious heh.
Walnut is the chocolate ice creme of wood. You can try all of the other flavours and pretend that they are your favourite but deep down you can not deny that it is the best.
I would love to make some chairs for it but they have some nice Eames Eiffel ones already.
Nick, they were fine with the bracket, it can not be seen so they were cool with it. And therefore so was I!
really sweet table. I'm curious how you did end up doing the tapered edge. Care to share?
