Washers

Wow what an exciting update. I made washers for the chair tonight by grinding down over sized ones. It is funny as I couldn't just buy washers with the correct inside/outside dimensions I wanted. I probably could if I ordered some online but I figured it wasn't worth it. Now I need to make the plugs for the holes. I am not thrilled about making washers in case you did not catch my sarcasm.

This weekend I began milling up some really nice white oak I had for a bench that I plan on making. It will be very simple and clean. I am actually really looking forward to making something straight forward without having to make a thousand jigs. It will be super minimalist.

hey ian, what's wrong with washers? the other day i had to file the taper out of machine screws to do that fix on the general bs fence, it was great!
what's happening with the stool? i'm working away on a open faced low steroe cabinet in d. fir, doing the surfaces, should be onto a small stand of mahogany next week. that should take me the better part of a month...

Do you got any pictures of it? I want to see. The stool is kind of sitting in the corner of my shop. There is something in the design that doesn't sit with me so I am going to keep it there until I figure it out. Have you seen the new FWW "Design" Issue yet?

I've been a happy lurker until now. Dude i love your blog, keep up the good work and take plenty of pictures!

no i haven't seen the design issue yet. i guess scott has got his chair in there. is it worth picking up? finding magazines here can be a pain in the ass. the closest place i can find woodwork is in halifax, five hours away. i'll send you some photos when i get the cabinet glued up, and maybe you can help me with the stand mockup!

Yo Dog(s)

Hey Ian, I'll knock you off some custom washers on my metal lathe. They're a bargain at $80 each!

I see Scott got two pieces in the FW Furniture issue. Good for him, that's great exposure. You ever notice how much being an american helps to get your work in FW? Maybe it's the anti-american in me, but how many times do you read about a furniture maker in like, Maine or something, who's 'successfully fused western furniture with an asian aesthetic' but don't ever just hear about asian furniture makers? I was thinking about that when I saw Tim Coleman's Temple Cabinet. They gush over his Chinese lattice carvings, but I don't think I've ever read about an actual chinese carver in FW.

Hey, how did Amish get a picture beside his name??

LORD GODFREY said...

Hey Amish, thanks for the comment. I will try to get more pictures very soon. I have been slacking as I am sick. I catch every cold my 2 year old daughter brings home. You got a blog or website I can check out?

LORD GODFREY said...

Cody,
I see you've become like every machinist out there, charging a small fortune for the simplest of tasks. My local guy would tell me it can't be done.
My whole take on those Design issues is that Woodworkers talking about Design is like Designers taking about Woodworking. It is usually pretty funny and handicapped.
I totally agree with your comments about not including the "real deal" work when it comes to what everyone emulates.
Here's what the Japanese are doing these days.

Like you said, they're obsessed with us while we're obsessed with them.

Cody, i have no idea i set this account up a while ago! its probably under edit profile.

Ian, yeah there should be a link to my blog from clicking my name, only one post but then again i just started this thing up.

Ps. is it just me or is finding spalted maple next to impossible? guys got any sources??

LORD GODFREY said...

I know Jacques got his from a guy out here on the West Coast named Robert Prinse. He had some slabs but I think he sold all of his good stuff to the Inside Passage school. I'll ask around as I have seen some pretty cool pieces floating around these days. You can always try Gilmer's in Portland Oregon as well.

amish said...

Thanks! I'll check it out!

Cody said...

It looks like you're out east Amish, try A&M in Cambridge. I bought some spalted maple out there once.

Is this the website where I can order a Sham-WOW for $19.95 in the next 10 minutes. Please let me know because I only have 9 minutes and 47 seconds left......46.........45.........44.

LORD GODFREY said...

No but you can buy a really expensive walnut rocking chair with Italian leather upholstery.

Anonymous said...

I would consider the rocker if it was made in east indian rosewood. now back to the sham-wow! is this the place to order if not could you be a sweetheart and point me in the right direction.

You should post some of your sketches, cause your sketches are kickass. I don't want to sound gay or nothin'...

too late cody... pretty gay.

hey cody, do you know anything about wirring two three way switches together to get a forward/reverse switch for a standard motor? i'm making a mortiser out of my woodlathe, but i don't want to get lefthand tooling for it, nor do i want to spend 79.99$ on a drum switch...

Cody said...

Jacques - Uh... no, I don't know anything about that. The motor is probably single phase hey? It's easy to reverse a three phase motor, but not all single phase motors are reversible. A good person to ask would be Ian's mentor Bruce - The B-Dawg! If he doesn't know he'll dedicate the remainder of his life to finding out. He'll actually probably hitch a ride out to the east coast and wire your lathe for you. He'll just show up on your step one day and eat all your food.

Cody said...

Anonymous - You sound handsome. Wanna get together later?

jacques said...

yeah cody, reversing the motor is easy enough, wire #5 and #8 get swaped, but i want to do it with a switch that is cheap... just thought that you may have known, just judging by the tricky wirring and micro-chips on your blog.
i'm afraid to ask bruce in case it is deamed unsafe.

Cody said...

Sheesh. You think Ian would have the decency to add another post to his blog so we don't end up with 40 comments on this one.

Jacques - I see what you're doing now, building a cheap reversing switch, gotcha, I should've read your post more carefully. Just off the top of my head, I think you would need a four way switch rather than a three way. Uh... Yeah, there is a way. Lemme ask an old fellow at the shop here, he's like my version of Bruce - but not nearly as 'fire marshal-esque'. I'll let you know.

Cody said...

Ok Jacques, I've got it figured. I even have a diagram! I need your email, and I'll send along what I found out.

jacques said...

hey cody, you can get in touch with me through my wesite endgrain.ca, there's an email address there. thanks

jacques said...

ohh yeah, hey ian, where did you get your end mills? maybe you know a good source too, cody. found a good one states side, but intl orders have a minimum of 250$ on them... i guess carbide would be the way to go?

Cody said...

Look for machine shop suppliers. There should be a ton out in eastern canada. The outfit I buy all my metalwork tooling from is called ACT equipment, but I think they're only western canada. Check out Sowa Tool, www.sowatool.com, they have suppliers everywhere. I don't think carbide cutters are necessary, I don't think carbide cutters are necessary, HSS would suffice for wood. Carbide is meant to take large chip loads and high heat - production type stuff. They're also crazy expensive. Make sure if you buy endmills to get 'center cut' endmills, otherwise they can't plunge cut.

I got my end mills from KBC Tools & Machinery. If you want I can give you a list of the ones I got. They where carbide (because I would like to use more Teak and Rosewood) and they are Niagara brand. Like Cody said I got center cut ones. I also got them in the 3 inch lengths like we had at the school. I got a set of 5 or 6 in total I think. They didn't cost as much as I thought they would, like 20 bucks a bit or something.

I'll try to get another post together tonight. I'll make something up.
